On August 30, 2011, at around 3:00 PM, Jeff Rudolph captured a dramatic scene in the 7700 block of Kilbourn in Skokie. The incident began as a call about a child trapped under a vehicle, prompting Skokie Fire Department to send a full extrication team — including two engines, a ladder truck, a squad, an ambulance, and a command unit. Upon arrival, Engine 16 discovered that it wasn’t a child at all, but an adult man who had been slightly intoxicated. He had jacked up one side of his car to work on the exhaust and ended up stuck beneath it. His friend, also under the influence, tried to help but only made the situation worse.
When Squad 16 arrived, they secured the vehicle with chocks and used airbags to lift it off the man. He was able to slide out with only minor abrasions and refused medical transport. Despite the mishap, he still needed to fix his exhaust, which added a touch of irony to the otherwise serious situation.
Jeff Rudolph captured several photos of the event, showing firefighters in action, the use of airbags, and the aftermath. The images highlight both the professionalism of the responders and the unusual nature of the incident.
