Super Bowl champion James Develin teams up with Autodesk to inspire the next generation of construction MVPs

In Boston, the skyline is constantly changing with new construction projects and cranes dotting the horizon. This rapid growth highlights a pressing need for a larger and more skilled construction workforce. At the same time, the industry is embracing cutting-edge technology, creating new roles that often go unfilled due to a lack of qualified workers. As a former educator, I’ve always believed in the power of partnerships between schools and industries. Recently, we had the opportunity to bring together students from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and Dearborn STEM Academy, along with skilled trade workers, local officials, and even three-time Super Bowl champion James Develin, for an inspiring day of learning and connection. The event was part of the Make It Modular Design Challenge, where students visited our Boston office on May 23rd to hear from construction professionals, tour the Autodesk Technology Center, and participate in a hands-on design challenge. It was a great chance for them to explore the exciting possibilities within the building trades. Paul Blandini, Vice President of Business Operations at Autodesk Construction Solutions (ACS), welcomed guests including City Councilor Erin Murphy, Kristin McSwain, director of the Office of Early Education, and Rev. Mariama White-Hammond. He emphasized the urgent need for skilled workers in the construction industry and encouraged students to consider these opportunities as viable and rewarding career paths. A panel featuring Ayub Sharif, James Develin, and professionals from various construction unions and organizations shared their experiences and advice. Shamaiah Turner, a Sheet Metal Worker, spoke about how her path took an unexpected turn after Hurricane Katrina, leading her to pursue a career in the trades. She highlighted the importance of programs like Boston’s Building Pathways, which aim to increase diversity in union construction. City Councilor Murphy stressed the need for more support and awareness for students interested in trade careers. “We don’t do enough to let students know that a non-college path can be just as valuable,” she said. “It takes smart, skilled people to succeed in these fields.” James Develin, known for his time with the New England Patriots, shared how his high school classes in AutoCAD sparked his interest in design. After retiring from football, he pursued entrepreneurship and now runs his own business. He emphasized the importance of clear communication and teamwork in construction projects. After lunch, the students toured the Technology Center, met Boston Dynamics’ robot Spot, and explored the latest in construction tech. They then participated in a hands-on design challenge using Build-It Disks made from recycled materials. The goal was to create models based on circular design principles—focusing on sustainability and community impact. Their designs were not only creative but also meaningful, showing how future builders can contribute to their communities through thoughtful, eco-friendly projects. The event left a lasting impression, showcasing the potential of the next generation of builders.
