In Boston, the skyline is constantly changing with new construction projects and cranes rising across the city. This rapid growth highlights a growing need for a larger, more skilled construction workforce. At the same time, the industry is embracing cutting-edge technology, creating new roles that are not being filled due to a shortage of qualified workers.
As a former educator, I’ve always believed in the power of education to shape future careers. That’s why I’m passionate about working with schools to open pathways to AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) jobs for the next generation. Recently, we brought together high school students from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and Dearborn STEM Academy, along with skilled trade workers, local officials, and even three-time Super Bowl champion James Develin, for an unforgettable day of learning and inspiration.
The event was part of the Make It Modular Design Challenge, where students visited our Boston office on May 23rd to hear from construction professionals, tour the Autodesk Technology Center, and take part in a hands-on design challenge. The day was filled with exciting opportunities for the students to explore the world of construction and learn about the possibilities ahead.
Paul Blandini, Vice President of Business Operations for Autodesk Construction Solutions, welcomed the group, which included City Councilor Erin Murphy, Kristin McSwain, Director of the Office of Early Education, and Rev. Mariama White-Hammond. He emphasized the urgent need for skilled workers in the construction industry and encouraged the students to consider these career paths as a viable and rewarding option.
A panel discussion featured Ayub Sharif, a former student of mine now working as a Project Software Engineer for the NBA, along with James Develin and other industry leaders. They shared their personal stories, challenges, and advice for young people looking to enter the trades. One panelist, Shamaiah Turner, spoke about how her experience volunteering with Habitat for Humanity helped her discover her passion for construction.
City Councilor Murphy also emphasized the importance of offering more opportunities for students interested in the trades, highlighting that there are many successful and fulfilling paths outside of traditional college education. James Develin, who has worked with Autodesk on the Make It Real program, shared his journey from football to entrepreneurship, showing how skills learned in high school can lead to a variety of exciting careers.
After lunch, the students toured the Technology Center, met Boston Dynamics’ robot Spot, and explored the latest in construction technology. Later, they participated in a hands-on design challenge using Build-It Disks made from recycled materials. Their creations were inspired by the principles of circular design, focusing on sustainability and community impact.
Their work was showcased at the end of the day, and their structures remained in the office as a lasting reminder of their creativity and potential. This event not only inspired the students but also highlighted the importance of community-centered construction projects that address real needs.
