Skokie responds to man trapped under a car

On August 30, 2011, at around 3:00 PM, Jeff Rudolph captured a dramatic scene in the 7700 block of Kilbourn in Skokie. The incident began as a call about a child trapped under a vehicle, prompting a full extrication response from local emergency services. Skokie Fire Department sent two engines, a ladder truck, a squad unit, an ambulance, and a battalion chief to the scene. Upon arrival, Engine 16 quickly realized the situation wasn’t what it seemed. Instead of a child, they found an adult male who had jacked up one side of his car and slid underneath to work on his exhaust system. Unfortunately, he got stuck and couldn't get out on his own. His friend, also slightly intoxicated, tried to help but only made things worse. When Squad 18 arrived, firefighters secured the vehicle with wheel chocks and used airbags to lift the car off the man. After some careful maneuvering, the man was able to slide out with only minor abrasions. He declined medical transport and remained on-site to finish his repairs. Jeff Rudolph documented the event with several photos, showing the fire department’s quick response and the unusual nature of the incident. The images capture firefighters using airbags to lift the vehicle, the man being freed, and the equipment involved in the rescue. One photo even shows Skokie Tower 16 and Battalion 16 responding to the scene. This incident serves as a reminder that sometimes, what starts as a serious call can turn into a more unusual and less dangerous situation. It also highlights the importance of having trained personnel ready to handle unexpected scenarios. If you're interested in seeing more of Jeff's photos, you can view them here.
