3PE anti-corrosion steel pipes are typically manufactured using three types of base materials: seamless steel pipes, spiral welded steel pipes, and straight seam steel pipes. The three-layer polyethylene (3PE) anti-corrosion coating has become a standard in the oil and gas industry due to its excellent resistance to corrosion, water vapor permeability, and mechanical strength. This coating system is known for its long service life and reliability under various environmental conditions.


Introduction to the Anti-Corrosion Layer of 3PE Pipes

The anti-corrosion layer plays a critical role in the longevity of buried pipelines. Even with the same material, some pipes can remain intact underground for decades without showing signs of corrosion, while others may fail within just a few years. This difference is largely due to the quality and type of the external anti-corrosion layer used.


Structure of 3PE Anti-Corrosion Coating

The 3PE anti-corrosion system consists of three distinct layers:

  • A layer of epoxy powder (FBE) with a thickness of over 100 micrometers
  • A middle layer of adhesive (AD) ranging from 170 to 250 micrometers
  • An outer layer of high-density polyethylene (PE), typically between 2.5 and 3.7 millimeters thick


In practice, these three materials are combined during the application process, forming a strong bond with the steel pipe. This results in a durable and effective protective coating. The two main application methods are the winding type and the round mold wrapping type, each offering specific advantages depending on the project requirements.


Advantages of 3PE Anti-Corrosion Steel Pipes

The 3PE coating is composed of an epoxy powder layer that adheres directly to the steel surface, a middle layer of adhesive that provides strong bonding, and a final layer of polyethylene that offers excellent weathering and impact resistance. This combination was developed by integrating the European 2PE system with the widely used FBE coating from North America. Over the past decade, this technology has gained global recognition and is now considered one of the most reliable anti-corrosion solutions for pipelines.


Inspection Process for 3PE Anti-Corrosion Pipes

The inspection process begins with a thorough check of the steel pipe to ensure it meets all necessary criteria for further processing into insulated pipes. This includes checking for corrosion, removing any debris or imperfections, and ensuring the surface is clean and properly prepared. Once the steel pipe is ready, it is placed inside a polyethylene casing, and polyurethane foam is injected to fill the space completely. Afterward, the finished product undergoes final inspection to ensure quality and compliance with standards.


Pre-Treatment of Base Material for 3PE Coating

Before applying the anti-corrosion coating, the steel pipe must be inspected and recorded upon entering the production platform. The outer surface is then treated through shot blasting to remove rust and impurities. The cleanliness of the surface and the depth of the anchor pattern are carefully checked. Any non-compliant areas are manually polished using a grinding wheel. The pipe ends are wrapped with tape paper, cleaned thoroughly, and heated to the required temperature. Epoxy powder is then sprayed onto the surface, followed by the application of the adhesive and polyethylene layers via extrusion. Finally, the coated pipes are cooled with water, marked, and prepared for storage and shipping after passing all quality checks.
