Chicago responded to a reported fire at a church located at 3450 W. 15th Street around 6:00 AM this morning. Upon arrival, first responders encountered heavy smoke and flames in a large, two-and-a-half-story brick church measuring approximately 50 by 150 feet. Immediately, the initial units called for a Box Alarm, and Tower Ladder 5 and Squad 1 were quickly deployed. A special call was made for the reserve Snorkel unit as the fire spread from the front of the building toward the rear, prompting a 2-11 Alarm to be issued. Firefighters worked swiftly to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further. Fortunately, most of the 2-11 companies were not needed, as the blaze was largely extinguished before they arrived. Gordon J. Nord, Jr., Tim Olk, and Steve Redick made their way to the scene, though the fire was already mostly out when they arrived. Tim and Steve captured several photos documenting the incident. Engine 38 was the first engine on the scene and was stationed at a hydrant on 15th Street just past the fire building. Steve Redick took the photo. Tower Ladder 5 positioned itself in front of the church, using the large stained glass window as a vantage point for visibility into the structure. Tim Olk captured the moment. Firefighters from Tower 5 later completed an overhaul through the large window opening, ensuring no hidden embers remained. Squad 1 was set up in the rear of the building and sent firefighters onto the roof to monitor the situation. Tim Olk documented the operation. Engine 107, the second-due engine, arrived on the south side of the building in Sector 1. Another image from Tim Olk shows the scene. An interior shot reveals some of the damage sustained by the church. The reserve Snorkel 1 (6-6-1), which was specially called from Engine 35’s station, never had to be used.
