Cicero fire companies responded to a fire at 5927 W. 35th Street on Saturday afternoon. The building was a two-story structure measuring 200 by 50 feet, with retail stores on the ground floor and residential units above. The fire originated in one of the second-floor apartments and quickly extended into the wooden flooring system, which sat over a concrete subfloor. This made containment and access more challenging for firefighters.

The fire spread laterally under the wooden floor, making it difficult to reach. A Box Alarm was called for mutual aid almost immediately, and it was soon upgraded to a 2nd Alarm as the situation became more complex. Firefighters from Stickney, Berwyn, North Riverside, Oak Park, Forest Park, Lyons, and Bedford Park joined the effort. Many crews used multiple saws to cut through the floors, allowing them to access and extinguish the fire. Fortunately, all residents escaped safely, though two Cicero firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Fire investigators believe the fire started in one of the upper-level apartments. While the origin doesn't appear suspicious, officials will continue their investigation on Sunday.
The Chicago Sun-Times also reported on the incident here.
