The Toyota Tacoma is on pace to surpass the yearly sales of the GMC Sierra. It will become the 4th best selling truck in North America. Big deal or no?

For years, the mid-size truck segment has been dominated by the Toyota Tacoma, which sold 39,467 units year-to-date. Its closest competitor, the Nissan Frontier, trailed significantly with just 12,178 units sold through March 2013. Monthly figures tell a more complete story: in March alone, the Tacoma outsold the Frontier by nearly 8,000 units, selling over 15,000 compared to the Frontier’s 6,800.

Currently, the Tacoma is closing in on the larger GMC Sierra. Though it's about 1,500 units behind year-to-date, it outperformed the Sierra by almost 2,000 units in March 2013. This suggests that the Tacoma is not only holding its own but gaining momentum against a bigger competitor.

Why Do These Sales Numbers Matter?

The mid-size and compact truck market has been largely ignored by the "Big Three" automakers. Ford has pulled the Ranger from U.S. production, leaving existing owners with limited options. Chrysler has long since stopped offering the Dakota, focusing instead on full-size trucks. GM, while retooling its lineup, is working on bringing back the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Sierra—but these are larger models that may not directly compete with the Tacoma.

Toyota, on the other hand, has remained committed to the compact truck market. By continuously refining the Tacoma with small, meaningful updates, it has kept the model relevant and competitive. In many ways, Toyota is the only automaker truly listening to what consumers want—a reliable, rugged, and safe compact truck.

This strategy is paying off. Toyota is attracting a loyal customer base that values practicality and dependability. These buyers aren’t interested in full-size trucks, and by capturing this market, Toyota is not only increasing its truck sales but also building brand loyalty that could extend to other Toyota products. This makes the company a major threat to traditional truck manufacturers.

So, does it matter if the Tacoma passes the Sierra? For some, it might seem like a small victory. But for others, it’s a sign that Toyota is making a serious move in the truck market—and that the competition is starting to take notice.
