Plainfield Fire District news

In a recent update from the HeraldNews.com, Plainfield Fire Protection District Chief David Riddle addressed concerns regarding potential misuse of public funds within his department. Following revelations by the Edgar County Watchdogs, it came to light that between August 2014 and November 2015, the fire district spent over $11,900 on questionable expenses charged to fire district credit cards. These expenditures included Christmas gifts, edible arrangements, flowers, massages, food, and even parties. Chief Riddle promptly responded by halting certain purchases, stating, "We're no longer buying flowers or edible arrangements for the families of those who have passed away." He also committed to taking a more active role in overseeing the district's Foreign Fire Tax Board, which had previously been criticized for spending over $12,000 on personalized blankets and throw pillows for staff and others during November and December. These practices will now cease immediately. "The response we get is usually that they’ll stop doing it," remarked an unnamed representative of the watchdog group, adding, "Reimbursement would be ideal, but at least stopping these unnecessary purchases is a step forward." The detailed list of credit card charges includes over $1,325 for a charity Turkey Raffle event, $1,300 for Christmas gifts, $1,490 for a retirement party, $724 for edible arrangements, $165 for flowers, $714 for a hog roast, $67.99 for corncob pipes, $75 for massages, and $6,045 for various food and party-related costs. Riddle acknowledged that some of these purchases, like flowers given to the bereaved, served a purpose in supporting the fire department. However, he admitted that such expenditures might not be the best use of taxpayer dollars. Having taken over as chief only a year prior, Riddle attributed many of these traditions to practices established decades ago when the district functioned as a volunteer organization. As this story unfolds, it highlights ongoing challenges in balancing community service with fiscal responsibility. While some argue that certain gestures help foster morale and support within the department, others stress the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in public spending. Moving forward, the Plainfield Fire Protection District appears poised to adopt stricter guidelines, aiming to restore public trust while maintaining essential services.
