Inverness president wants new auto-aid agreement (update)

Inverness Village President Jack Tatooles recently renewed his call for an agreement between the Barrington Countryside FPD and the Palatine Rural FPD. His proposal involves the Palatine Rural FPD handling emergency responses across all of Inverness, including areas already covered by the Barrington Countryside FPD. This move has sparked considerable discussion, with the Daily Herald providing further updates on the ongoing debate. Tatooles emphasized during a recent meeting that having Palatine Rural's fire services cover the western part of Inverness would significantly improve response times. He argued that Palatine Rural's station is just 1.5 miles from this area, whereas Barrington Countryside's nearest station is located 5 miles away in Barrington Hills, and another is 7 miles away in Lake Barrington. Despite these logistical advantages, reaching an agreement remains challenging due to financial concerns. The sticking point seems to be how much property tax revenue Palatine Rural would receive under such an arrangement. According to Palatine Rural President Glen Grosch, his district has consistently sought a substantial portion of Barrington Countryside's property taxes from the affected parts of Inverness. Grosch explained that similar agreements exist between Palatine Rural and neighboring fire departments like those in Palatine and Rolling Meadows. However, he noted that no specific figures have been finalized for this potential partnership. Barrington Countryside's trustees, including Paul Heinze and Marvin Hill, recently hosted an information session to discuss recent changes following their separation from the Barrington Fire Department on January 1st. While other local officials raised questions about staffing levels and train-related delays, Tatooles' focus remained firmly on securing this new cooperative agreement. Grosch expressed skepticism about resolving these financial differences anytime soon, suggesting instead that any resolution might require a public vote via referendum. As a board member, Grosch clarified that he cannot alter fire district boundaries independently; however, citizen-driven initiatives often hold sway in such matters. This issue underscores broader challenges faced by municipalities seeking efficient emergency services without straining budgets. With each side holding firm on its position, finding common ground will likely prove difficult unless external pressures or creative solutions emerge.
