Dispute arises between the Barrington FD and the Barrington Countryside FPD

Local news outlet The Daily Herald recently covered an ongoing issue involving the Village of Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. The split between the two entities occurred as planned on New Year's Day, but not without a few hiccups. Specifically, there was a misunderstanding regarding the transfer of personal safety gear belonging to 19 firefighters who were let go by the village at midnight. These firefighters were unable to take their custom-fitted gear with them when they joined the fire district.

This oversight left the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District scrambling to secure necessary equipment just days before the split. Initially, they had to borrow gear from the nearby Fox River Grove Fire Protection District and began making arrangements to lease additional equipment for the upcoming months. According to Barrington Village Manager Jeff Lawler, the issue stemmed from the fact that the district did not hire the firefighters directly but instead contracted with Paramedic Services of Illinois. He stated, “It is taxpayer property, and we cannot simply hand it over without following the appropriate legal procedures.” Lawler mentioned that this matter had been discussed with fire district officials back in early December, and he found it surprising that they hadn't resolved it sooner.

In response, Barrington Countryside board President Tom Rowan noted that the conversation Lawler referenced seems to be remembered differently by each party involved. Due to the shared ownership of equipment during their long-term partnership, Rowan explained that it was intended to divide the assets equally when the split occurred—just like the vehicles were divided.

Despite these complications, Barrington Countryside Fire Chief Jeff Swanson emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety over rigid adherence to regulations. Although the legal division of equipment could have been sorted out gradually, the firefighters needed access to their gear immediately on New Year's Day. Swanson pointed out that the situation was manageable because the affected firefighters—19 in total—had recently ordered custom-fit equipment that is expected to arrive in the spring. Until then, they will rely on leased gear.

Aside from this logistical challenge, both organizations have confirmed that they are meeting their operational duties post-split. The Barrington Fire Department now focuses solely on its five-square-mile jurisdiction within the village, while the Barrington Countryside FPD continues to serve areas including parts of Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, Inverness, and unincorporated regions of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.

Interestingly, morale remains strong among the new team at Barrington Countryside, as evidenced by their thorough cleaning of all incoming equipment shortly after receiving it from the village.

Separately, here’s what we know about the apparatus split:

The Village of Barrington Fire Department retains:

  • One engine
  • The quint
  • The battalion buggy
  • Two ambulances

The Barrington Countryside FPD has:

  • Two engines
  • The squad vehicle
  • The tanker (with an additional new tanker recently acquired)
  • Two ambulances

We currently lack clarity regarding the ownership of the brush unit. However, given the circumstances surrounding the split, discussions are likely underway to clarify these details. For now, both parties seem focused on ensuring smooth operations moving forward while addressing any lingering issues.
