Grant Program Offers Over 300 Women Custom-Fit Safety Harnesses to Improve Workplace Safety and Encourage More Women to Join the Construction Industry

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., March 2, 2020 — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) have announced a new initiative aimed at improving safety for women in construction by providing more than 300 fall protection harnesses specifically designed for female workers. The program, which supports 21 construction firms, is part of a broader effort to address critical safety concerns and attract more women to the industry.

The initiative highlights the urgent need for better-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) for women, who currently make up less than 9% of the construction workforce. According to federal data, only 3% of craft professionals in construction are women. Meanwhile, falls remain one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities in the industry, as identified by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

“We know that diversity is key to the future of construction, and ensuring that women have access to safe, well-fitting gear is essential,” said Allison Scott, director of construction thought leadership at Autodesk. “This grant program is not just about safety—it’s about creating an inclusive environment where women can thrive.”

Stephen E. Sandherr, CEO of AGC of America, emphasized that properly fitting PPE is crucial for both safety and retention. “Ill-fitting gear can increase the risk of injury and discourage women from staying in the field,” he said. “By investing in custom equipment, we’re helping firms meet their safety goals and fill labor gaps at the same time.”

Several companies involved in the program have already begun integrating the new harnesses into their safety protocols. Russ Nicolai, safety manager at Snyder Roofing, said the support comes at a critical moment. “We’re always looking for ways to improve worker safety and comfort, especially for those in high-risk roles like roofing,” he said. “This grant gives us the tools we need to make real progress.”

Anne Brown of Christman Constructors added, “It’s time to bring more women into construction. We believe that with the right support and equipment, they can succeed and help shape the future of the industry.”

Billy Naylor, regional safety director at McCarthy, noted that many construction companies face challenges in addressing the unique needs of female workers. “We want to ensure that all employees, regardless of gender, feel supported and protected,” he said. “This is a step toward a safer, more inclusive industry.”

The 21 participating firms collectively employ over 22,000 people across the U.S. AGC is collaborating with safety equipment manufacturers MSA and 3M to provide the customized harnesses, and all grantees must complete training on proper use. Winners will be recognized at the AGC Annual Convention and CONEXPO-CON/AGG conference in Las Vegas during the week of March 9.
