At the recent National On-site Meeting of the State Grid Corporation's Enterprise Management Innovation, Zhejiang Hangzhou Power Supply Company introduced a groundbreaking smart meter collection system called "LastGasp." This innovative technology aims to revolutionize power outage management and improve service efficiency for customers.
Grid companies play a crucial role in delivering safer, more economical, cleaner, and sustainable energy. Despite continuous grid upgrades, power outages in Hangzhou still occur—particularly during extreme weather conditions like heatwaves or cold spells, when supply struggles to meet demand. Most outages are caused by equipment failures rather than systemic issues.
To address this challenge, Hangzhou Power Supply Company launched the "LastGasp" smart meter system. Equipped with a super capacitor, these meters can maintain a brief power supply even during outages. This allows them to send an emergency signal to the distribution automation system, alerting technicians to the exact location of the fault.
So far, 100,000 LastGasp meters have been installed in pilot areas, offering customers a hands-free repair experience. In the Qianjiang Century City area, the system has reduced average annual power outages to under two minutes, significantly improving customer satisfaction.
Beyond quick fault detection, the system also enhances on-site repair efficiency. For instance, it enables nearby repair teams to be dispatched promptly and provides accurate home addresses for first-time visits. Additionally, Hangzhou is developing a comprehensive data asset system for the entire distribution network. This allows repair crews to access detailed information about the faulty equipment and customer location simultaneously, enabling faster and more accurate responses.
In the future, as LastGasp meters evolve, residents may no longer need to call the 95598 hotline. Instead, electricians could arrive at their doorstep within seconds of a power cut, and communities might regain power in just 10 seconds. Customers could even receive automatic SMS updates about power status without any manual intervention.
Looking ahead, Hangzhou Power Supply Company plans to use LastGasp meters as key data points for collecting energy usage from water, electricity, gas, and even distributed power generation in residential areas. This will allow real-time monitoring and analysis of energy efficiency, turning the small electric meter into a true "energy data steward" for households.
