Northbrook house fire 9-23-11

Friday morning around 7:30 AM, the Northbrook Fire Department received multiple calls reporting heavy smoke coming from a vacant home at 1017 Shermer Road. When first responders arrived, they found thick smoke filling the entire ranch-style house, with the source clearly coming from the basement. The situation was quickly escalated to a Code 4, indicating a working fire, and additional units from Glencoe and Northfield were dispatched to assist. Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the blaze, using water lines to attack the fire from multiple angles. Due to the challenging conditions, including heavy smoke and limited visibility, crews had to carefully navigate the structure. After the fire was fully extinguished, an investigator’s box alarm was called in, bringing in fire investigators from neighboring departments within Division 3 to help determine the cause of the fire. Tim Olk was among the first on the scene and captured several powerful images documenting the incident. His photos show firefighters battling the flames, venting windows, and working through thick smoke to gain control of the situation. One image shows the initial arrival of firefighters, who quickly realized the fire was located in the basement after venting a window and advancing a line through the front door. Another photo captures crews working to remove the front door and vent the roof, while a third highlights a line being placed through a basement window as the truck company prepares to exit the roof. For more photos from the scene, Tim has shared a full gallery that you can view [here](#).
