Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
An unexpected incident at Elgin Fire Station 1, located at 550 Summit St., left the facility temporarily closed over the weekend after an old fire extinguisher accidentally discharged. The outdated device, believed to be from the 1950s, was reportedly brought to the station at an unknown time and later placed in the trash. A firefighter attempted to release pressure from the canister inside the building, unaware of its contents.
The canister contained carbon tetrachloride, a known carcinogen, as confirmed by Battalion Chief Bryan McMahan. Exposure to this substance can lead to serious health issues, including headaches, nausea, vomiting, and long-term damage to the liver and kidneys, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Animal studies also suggest an increased risk of liver cancer from prolonged exposure.
Following the incident, the station was evacuated, and hazardous materials crews were called in for cleanup. According to McMahan, the site is now being tested for air quality, and officials are waiting for the results before allowing the station to reopen. Meanwhile, firefighters from Stations 5 and 6 have been covering for Station 1 during the closure.
The firefighter who released the chemical, along with two others, was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital for evaluation but has since been released and returned to duty. The hazmat team completed the initial cleanup, and the station remains under review for safety compliance.
"We're hoping to get back in there tomorrow," McMahan said on Sunday, expressing hope that the station will soon be operational again.
Thanks, Dan
