Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
A surprising and unexpected incident occurred at Elgin Fire Station 1, located at 550 Summit Street, when an old fire extinguisher from the 1950s accidentally discharged on Friday. The event left the station temporarily out of commission over the weekend as hazardous materials teams worked to clean up the area, according to officials.
Exposure to carbon tetrachloride can lead to serious health issues. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), short-term inhalation or ingestion may cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Long-term exposure or high-level contact can result in liver and kidney damage, as noted by the agency.
Animal studies have shown that prolonged exposure to carbon tetrachloride increases the risk of liver cancer, the EPA website states.
"The station was evacuated, and a hazmat team has been working there for the past few days. We hope to get back in tomorrow," said McMahan on Sunday.
The firefighter who triggered the discharge and two others were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital for evaluation but were released and have since returned to full duty, he added.
The hazmat crew completed the cleanup, and fire officials are now awaiting the results of a third-party air quality test before reopening the station, McMahan said. In the meantime, Stations 5 and 6 have been covering the area served by Station 1 during the cleanup.
