Down memory lane …

Another post from Steve Redick has just landed, this time featuring some classic suburban firefighting scenes. As usual, he's dug up some great historical content that takes us back to the 1980s. This first set of images comes from what was once Battalion 7, now Division 20, in either Maywood or Bellwood—Steve isn't quite sure which. There are some action-packed photos here, and maybe someone out there will recognize some familiar faces among the firefighters. Steve always admired the rigs, especially the ALF water chiefs, though he mentioned that they seemed to have had their fair share of issues with the water systems. He also included a couple of shots from a fire in Glenview at a vacant supermarket. You can see the Glenbrook Snorkel in action before it underwent its major rebuild. Both sets of photos date back to the 1980s, and they really bring the past alive. Looking at the images, you'll notice Maywood firefighters hard at work battling a house fire. There's an old modular ambulance parked nearby, giving a glimpse into how things used to be. The Hendrickson/E-ONE engine is another standout piece of equipment that caught Steve's eye. It's amazing to see how much these vehicles have evolved over the years. The Glenbrook Rural Fire Protection District is represented beautifully in these vintage photos as well. You’ll see the Snorkel in operation during an intense extra-alarm fire, and later, a close-up of a Glenbrook FPD Pierce Arrow engine pumping water at a vacant supermarket blaze. Broadview’s American LaFrance Water Chief Quint is another gem, showing off impressive firefighting tech from the era. There's even more to explore in the additional photos, like another angle of the Hendrickson/E-ONE engine from Maywood. These images truly capture the essence of firefighting in the 1980s, reminding us of both the challenges faced by firefighters back then and the progress made since. Steve’s collection is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in local fire department history, and it’s always exciting to see what he digs up next.
