Brilliance: Developing a New Engine Platform to Reveal M2


When the Chinese M1 sedan currently on the market was still the sample just completed by the Italian automotive design company, Brilliance shouted the slogan of “free brand”. Now that the M1 series has been on the market for almost two years, Brilliance is improving its own "brand strategy" through quality storms, questions of property rights, and ruthless market competition. The current development of M2 and the launch of next year will be a further development of Brilliance’s own brand strategy.

Forerunner M1

The R&D of M1 began in 1997. Since then, Brilliance has started a difficult learning process. The beautiful design and excellent handling of the M1 series provided Brilliance with favorable conditions for the further refinement of the Chinese brand. It also enabled Brilliance to have its own vehicle platform from the very beginning and become the next five years after 2002. The R&D foundation for the new Chinese M2 and M3 models. In fact, M1's R&D was not as long as 5 years, and it took a lot of time to get permission to market the products. The M2 series will be available at the Shanghai International Auto Show next year. M2 is not a new generation of M1, but a brand new model series positioned under M1.

M2, which is one size smaller than M1, is still built on the platform of M1, but its length is shorter than M1 by nearly 30 centimeters and is 4.6 meters. It belongs to the category of medium-sized cars. Since the wheelbase also maintains 2.79 meters of M1, the interior space of the M2 is not affected by the shortening of the body, which also gives the M2 a considerable space advantage in the same class. The shortening is the overhanging part of the front and rear of the vehicle, that is, the area between the axle of the wheel and the vehicle body. This can make the M2's turning radius significantly smaller, more flexible and dynamic to control, and because the overall body is more compact and easier to park in crowded cities, it is more suitable for private owners than the M1.

Engineering is more important than modeling

Another experience gained with R&D M1 is that engineering is more important than modeling. Due to the unsatisfactory chassis at the beginning of M1, Brilliance later made great efforts to cooperate with Porsche to improve the Chinese chassis. This also opens the door for Brilliance’s full cooperation with Porsche in M2 R&D.

Porsche is one of the world's most famous automotive engineering companies. It is also very good at car design. In history, almost every Porsche car was considered a classic. M2 will be Porsche's first model to fully demonstrate its level of auto engineering to the Chinese market.

M2 will present Pininfarina style

In addition to the transfer of automotive engineering R&D, starting from the Chinese M2, Brilliance’s partners in automotive design have also changed, and M2 will present Pininfarina’s style. This is a very famous Italian design company. In fact, Binfah was more experienced in engineering design than Georgian Luo, because Binfah himself also engaged in the production of production vehicles. This facilitates the docking of M2 in design and engineering design, and avoids irrational engineering in the design of the design.

A, B program is not conclusive

There are two versions of the M2 modeling program: A and B. The manufacturer has not commented on which project is finalized. However, we suspect that the A version is the most likely, because the A version is more distinctive in the style of the characteristics of the Bin method. As the platform remains unchanged, the mid-section of the M2 and M1 is almost the same, and the outline of the vehicle cannot be changed much. The changes of the shape can only be concentrated on the details of the front face and tail. The slim version of the A version of the profiled headlights embodies the classic style of the Bingfa's emphasis on balanced elegance. The two sharp ridges drawn from the A-pillars are connected together in the middle of the bottom edge of the bumper, making it an extraordinary force. The fenders on both sides are significantly lower than the hood and extend rearwards to form the shoulders of the body. The thin waistline passes through the door handle and the headlights eventually meets the bonnet of the hood, emphasizing the integrity of the design. Develop new engine platform

With M2, Brilliance will also have an autonomous body platform to further develop its own engine platform. The platform is an all-aluminum 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 liters of naturally aspirated 16-valve and 1.8T16 valve turbocharged models. The first to launch with M2 is the powerful 1.8T, 170 horsepower, and 235 Nm. These indicators are higher than the current Volkswagen 1.8T20 valve engine in China.

This engine platform has been designed into the VVT ​​variable valve timing system. It is reserved on the cylinder block and cylinder head, and can be upgraded in time according to the situation. The new engine series will improve the autonomy of Chinese brand models and remain proactive in the increasingly brutal price competition. It will be put into production at Brilliance's newly-built engine plant next year, and will be supplied to the M2 series models that will be launched at the same time.

Truly own property

Starting from M2, Brilliance officially started on the road to possessing both property rights and knowledge. M2's research and development work at the time of signing the commission contract stipulated that Brilliance's own R&D personnel should participate in both the modeling and engineering fields. Binfar and Porsche are all open to R&D on M2 projects. This will ensure that Brilliance will acquire more R&D technology and obtain necessary experience for future R&D. These experiences will be further drilled on the M3 project.

M1 gets reborn

As for M1, it will once again get a substantial upgrade. Brilliance has positioned it as the flagship of all models. From next year, the quality of the M1 will be more exquisite, and the selection of materials will be more sophisticated. In particular, a 200-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine has been matched for it as the top model of the M1 to match the high-end image of its executive-class sedan. However, as the development of the engine must be gradual, this engine cannot be produced for the time being and will be provided by other international famous brands.

A few years ago the appearance of China, Chery, Hafei and Geely made the "independent brand" on the first bus of the Chinese auto market.
