On August 11, 2022, firefighters from Barrington and Countryside were quickly dispatched to two separate house fires reported in the afternoon. Both incidents occurred almost simultaneously, with crews responding to addresses on Penny Drive and 4 McGlashen Drive in South Barrington. The fire on Penny Drive was later determined to be unfounded, while the incident at 4 McGlashen Drive involved heavy fire in the garage, reportedly triggered by an explosion that neighbors had heard.
Upon arrival, the situation was escalated to a Code 4 Working Fire, prompting the request for a MABAS Box Alarm as crews transitioned to a defensive position. Just minutes later, a second alarm was called to bolster resources. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze largely to the garage and kitchen areas, preventing it from spreading further through the large home.
The property is located in a gated community without access to hydrants, so a tanker shuttle was organized to supply water for firefighting efforts. A total of twelve tankers were deployed, including units from Barrington Countryside, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Round Lake, Bartlett, Nunda, Libertyville, Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, Huntley, and McHenry Township.
At the scene, engine companies came from Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Schaumburg, Cary, Carpentersville, Algonquin, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Lincolnshire, and Lake Zurich, along with three units from Barrington Countryside. Rescue squads were provided by Schaumburg and Cary, while ambulances arrived from Barrington, Mount Prospect, and Des Plaines.
This multi-agency response highlighted the coordination and preparedness of local emergency services in handling a complex and challenging fire situation. The quick actions of the firefighters helped limit damage and protect the surrounding area.
