At the time, a moderate to heavy fog blanketed the area, and when firefighters arrived, they observed light-colored smoke billowing from the house.
Initially treated as a working fire, it was soon escalated to a Full Still and later to a Box Alarm, specifically for companies needing to adjust their quarters. However, interior teams faced challenges in pinpointing the exact location of the fire within the basement, prompting the need for a stronger water supply. This led to another Box Alarm being issued, this time requesting tender support. Interestingly, this incident happened during the early stages of a 2-Alarm fire that the Wauconda FPD was dealing with in an adjacent district. Consequently, several units dispatched to the Countryside fire were already committed elsewhere, necessitating reinforcements from the next available companies listed on the box card.
As the fire intensified, spreading to the first floor, all personnel were ordered to evacuate the building. The decision was made to switch to a defensive firefighting strategy. Roughly 35 minutes into the operation, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. Shortly after, the flames were brought under control, allowing firefighters to re-enter the structure to extinguish any remaining hotspots.
The simultaneous occurrence of multiple large-scale fires in the area meant that responding units from neighboring districts like Northbrook, Antioch, Newport Township, North Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Prospect Heights, Zion, Fox River Grove, and even the Great Lakes Naval Training Center had to be called in. Reports suggest there were around eight tender trucks on site at one point, highlighting the significant resources needed to manage such a challenging situation.
