On a Saturday evening (May 20, 2017), the Countryside Fire Protection District got an urgent call about a basement fire accompanied by loud explosions at a residence located at 4 Keuka Court in Hawthorn Woods. The homeowner informed responders that there were model cars with batteries stored in the basement, which they believed could be responsible for the explosive noises. A thick, moderate to heavy fog had settled over the area when firefighters arrived to find light-colored smoke billowing out of the house.
The initial fire response quickly escalated to a Full Still operation, and a Box Alarm was issued specifically for companies to change their quarters. However, finding the exact location of the fire within the basement proved challenging for interior teams, and the increasing demand for a more robust water supply prompted another upgrade to a Box Alarm for tenders. Around the same time, the Wauconda FPD was dealing with an early-stage two-alarm fire in an adjacent district. Consequently, several units originally assigned to the Countryside fire were already engaged in the Wauconda incident, necessitating reinforcements from other available resources listed on the box card.
As the fire intensified, it began to compromise a portion of the first floor, forcing all personnel to evacuate the structure. Firefighting strategies shifted to a defensive approach, and approximately 35 minutes into the incident, the alarm was elevated to a second alarm status. Shortly after, the flames were brought under control, allowing firefighters back inside to eliminate any lingering hotspots.
The simultaneous multiple-alarm fires in Hawthorn Woods led to extended response times for various neighboring districts. Units from Northbrook, Antioch, Newport Township, North Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Prospect Heights, Zion, Fox River Grove, and even the Great Lakes Naval Training Center were dispatched to assist. An unofficial tally suggests there were eight tender units present at the scene.
