The Great Barrier Reef adapts to past climate change

Coral reefs are one of the greatest natural wonders in the world. A new study found that corals adapt to greater temperature changes in the Great Barrier Reef than before. Australia’s northeast coast stretches for approximately 2,300 kilometers, an intricate seashore with inlaid corals, coral reefs and local islands. This huge ecosystem has a lot of marine life and is a protected area for marine birds.

The scientists involved in the study wanted to know how coral reefs responded today after the 20,000-year-old sea level rise and temperature change peaked during the last ice age. In 2010, the expedition crew at the Greatship Maya equipped a drilling platform to extract coral fossils from the tropical Pacific Ocean. Felis pointed out that the global sea level at the time was lower than the current 120 meters. In addition, Felis said that the surface temperature of the ocean is two to three degrees Celsius, and coolers are along the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef compared to the northern part of their study. In contrast, he said that today's temperature difference is 0.6 degrees Celsius.
