On March 27th, Teijin Co., Ltd. held a press conference at the China International Textile New Technology Exhibition to present its advanced chemical recycling technology and titanium catalyst technology for polyester. The event provided an opportunity for industry professionals and media to learn more about Teijin’s sustainable initiatives and technological innovations.
Mr. Kitahiro, Director of the Overseas Business Development Office of the Teijin Group, shared insights into the company’s environmental safety policies. As a global leader in synthetic fibers based on chemical technology, Teijin has committed to its Declaration of "Enhancing the Quality of Human Life through Deep Understanding of Humanity and Extensive Creativity," as well as its Earth Environmental Charter. These guiding principles reflect the company's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility across all operations.
Mr. Sato, Director of the Raw Material Superposition Division, introduced Teijin’s groundbreaking technologies in polyester chemical recycling and titanium-based catalysis. The company has been researching chemical recycling of polyester for nearly a decade, with the first commercial application launched in 2002. Today, Teijin is producing high-quality fiber products from recycled polyester fibers and even manufacturing polyester raw materials for bottles using a “from bottle to bottle†process. This technology is currently operational in Matsuyama and Tokuyama, Japan, with capacities of 10,000 t/a and 50,000 t/a respectively.
The recycled polyester produced through this method is chemically identical to that made from petroleum-based feedstocks. Moreover, it significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 80%. Currently, only Teijin and Asahi Kasei are leading the way in commercial-scale renewable recycling. Asahi Kasei’s capacity stands at 3,000 t/a.
In China, some companies have started implementing "bottle-to-bottle" recycling, but only about 20% of their products are made from recycled materials, with the rest still relying on traditional petrochemical sources. Mr. Sato noted that while Teijin has discussed technology transfer with Chinese firms, several challenges remain. A major issue is the lack of a stable supply of recycled materials, as waste from downstream fiber producers is not yet fully utilized.
In addition to recycling, Teijin has also developed an environmentally friendly titanium-based catalyst to replace traditional antimony-based ones in polyester production. This innovation supports the company’s goal of reducing heavy metal usage. Teijin has announced plans to expand production of this eco-friendly polyester and is actively engaging with companies in Japan and abroad to explore technology transfer opportunities. The company continues to lead the way in sustainable textile innovation, setting new standards for the industry.
