I know it’s not Chicago Area, but it's kind of interesting.
From NorthJersey.com:
The upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII stands out for several reasons, and one of the most unique aspects is the public safety operations that involve multiple federal, state, county, and municipal agencies. This is due to the Meadowlands' special geographic layout. In fact, this might be the first time a Super Bowl relies largely on a volunteer fire department. But there's another group that plays a key role here — the Meadowlands Fire Department.
Most of the surrounding municipalities, including East Rutherford itself, depend on volunteer fire departments, which is quite unusual for an event typically held in major metro areas with centralized public safety forces. However, the entire Meadowlands complex — including MetLife Stadium, the Izod Center, the racetrack, and the Quest Center — is served by the Meadowlands Fire Department. Originally known as the New Jersey Sports Exhibition Authority Fire Department, it was established in 1975, just a year before the first venue, the racetrack, opened in the area. The state-funded department has 22 members and a station on Route 120 in East Rutherford, and it responds to all events at the complex.
Their coverage area includes roadways leading into the complex, parts of Route 120, Barry’s Creek Road, and Route 3 between the stadium and arena. They also monitor the flyover bridge from Route 3 over the New Jersey Turnpike into the complex, according to Captain Kevin Meehan of the Meadowlands Fire Department.
The department is equipped with a variety of tools to handle the range of emergencies they might face. Their fleet includes a 2009 quint aerial ladder, a 2014 Ford F-450 mini-pumper, and a 2004 F-550 mini-pumper. They also have a smaller vehicle for quick responses.
"It's basically a glorified golf cart," Meehan said. "It carries 100 pounds of water and 10 gallons of foam, and it's easy to maneuver to reach the stadium access points if we have a fire."
In addition to the Meadowlands Fire Department, a network of mutual aid agreements has been set up with local departments. East Rutherford is coordinating these efforts, along with the Meadowlands Fire Department.
"On game day, the East Rutherford Fire Department will be on standby in case we need them," Meehan explained. "Carlstadt will also be on standby, and other agencies like Wood-Ridge will be ready if needed. These are departments that are a bit farther away but still easily accessible."
"We’ll be providing rescue services for the event, especially for any automotive or transit accidents on the highways," said Lyndhurst Assistant Fire Chief Paul Haggerty. "Also, our department will be activated to cover our township because we expect a lot of visitors coming in. We'll be staffing our fire headquarters from noon to midnight."
Two Lyndhurst fire units will be assigned to the Super Bowl operations, meaning the whole department will be on alert. The township has several locations that will see increased activity, such as hotels and commercial buildings.
"Any resources that the command agencies need will be available in the surrounding towns," Haggerty said. "All we need to do is pick up the radio, and we’ll be on our way. Strategic units will be staged in different firehouses under the joint plan we’ve been working on for almost a year now."
… East Rutherford police officers and borough fire officials visited the last two Super Bowls to observe how their cities managed operations.
Haggerty praised East Rutherford for its excellent coordination of the various Meadowlands departments and for developing a solid plan.
