I know it’s not in the Chicago area, but I thought it was interesting and worth sharing.
From NorthJersey.com:
The upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII stands out for several reasons, one of which is the unique public safety coordination across multiple agencies due to the Meadowlands' geographic layout. It could even be the first time a Super Bowl relies mostly on a volunteer fire department. But another less-known group also plays a key role: the Meadowlands Fire Department.
Most of the surrounding municipalities, including East Rutherford, depend on volunteer fire departments, which is unusual for a major event typically held in large cities with full-time public safety teams. However, the entire Meadowlands complex — including MetLife Stadium, the Izod Center, the racetrack, and the Quest Center — is served by the Meadowlands Fire Department. Originally known as the New Jersey Sports Exhibition Authority Fire Department, it was established in 1975, just a year before the first venue opened in the complex.
The state-paid department has 22 members and a station on Route 120 in East Rutherford. They are responsible for all events at the complex. Their coverage includes roadways leading into the stadium, parts of Route 120, Barry’s Creek Road, and Route 3 between the stadium and arena. They also cover the flyover bridge from Route 3 over the New Jersey Turnpike into the complex.
The department has a range of equipment to handle different types of emergencies. This includes a 2009 quint aerial ladder, two mini-pumpers (a 2014 Ford F-450 and a 2004 F-550), and a smaller vehicle for quick responses. The small vehicle, described as “a glorified golf cart,†carries 100 pounds of water and 10 gallons of foam, allowing it to move easily through tight spaces near the stadium.
In addition to the Meadowlands Fire Department, mutual aid agreements have been set up with local departments. East Rutherford is coordinating these efforts, along with the Meadowlands Fire Department itself. On game day, the East Rutherford Fire Department will be on standby, as will departments from Carlstadt and Wood-Ridge, which are a bit further away but still accessible.
Lyndhurst Assistant Fire Chief Paul Haggerty said, “We’ll be providing rescue services for any automotive or transit accidents on the highways. Our department will also be activated to cover our township since there will be many visitors coming to the area. We’ll have our headquarters staffed from noon to midnight.â€
Two Lyndhurst fire units will be assigned to the Super Bowl operations, meaning the whole department will be active. The township includes areas that will see increased traffic, such as hotels and commercial buildings.
Haggerty added, “If any agency needs resources, they can simply call and we’ll be on the way. Strategic units will be staged in different fire stations under a joint plan we’ve been working on for almost a year now.â€
East Rutherford police officers and fire officials even traveled to the last two Super Bowls to observe how their city handled the operations.
Haggerty praised East Rutherford for its excellent planning and coordination of the various departments involved in the event.
