Industrialization of hybrid vehicles in China is facing three major problems

As a “quasi-green car”, hybrid vehicles have been in the commercial development stage in developed countries. Currently, major auto companies in the world are conducting research on hybrid power unit technology, energy storage technology, and automotive integrated power electronics modules. The author believes that although China has a certain foundation and achieved some results in the field of hybrid vehicles, the gap between the level of technology and industrialization and the international level is still very large, and its development faces the following three problems.

First, the development of key parts and components needed for hybrid vehicles in our country is not yet mature. It is necessary to establish a perfect mixture.

It will take a long time for the industrialized industrial base and after-sales service system of the power car. At present, in order to introduce hybrid vehicle products as soon as possible, some domestic companies still rely on foreign companies for key technology development and parts and components. This can be understood from the perspective of enterprises seizing the market, but if so, it will surely result in China’s autonomous hybrid vehicles in the future. Products, but still have no core technology of products, have no knowledge of property rights, hollowing problems cannot be solved.

Second, hybrid vehicles have high technological content and high prices, resulting in smaller scale of purchases and difficulty in mass production. At present, the manufacturing cost of hybrid vehicles in China is 30% higher than that of traditional automobiles of the same type, and this is simply not enough for traditional methods of cost reduction such as procurement control, management enhancement, and design optimization. In fact, even Toyota, which is the most advanced technology in hybrid vehicles, acknowledges that the cost of fuel saved during the service life of the company's hybrid vehicles is not enough to offset the additional payment for hybrid vehicles.

Third, if hybrid vehicles are to be industrialized, they also need strong support from policies. This is also a common practice in the world. The release of the standard for hybrid vehicles only shows that there is no policy obstacle to the introduction of hybrid vehicles. In addition, other government support policies are still indispensable. The state can fully introduce some preferential measures for hybrid vehicles, such as exemption of road maintenance fees, vehicle purchase tax, or direct cash subsidies, which will be a win-win situation for the country, manufacturers, and individuals.

The soaring oil price has shortened the time from the test room to the market for hybrid vehicles. However, it is not enough to realize the marketization of a small number of products. Marketization is not difficult, but industrialization is difficult. From the process of marketization to industrialization, it will be a severe test for domestic companies. The state must have plans for macroeconomic policies and give corporate support. The enterprises themselves must also immediately start the localization of new energy vehicles and related parts and components. In this way, the price competitive advantage of our products will be obvious. According to the current technology base in China, priority should be given to the development of hybrid powertrains that have relatively low requirements for motors and batteries. This not only saves development costs, but also has wider industrial application.
