The global demand for methyl methacrylate (MMA) has shown consistent growth over the years, with an average annual increase of 4% to 5% since 2002. This trend is expected to continue at a slightly slower pace of 3% to 5% in the coming years. Asia remains the key driver of this growth, with projections of 7% to 8% annually, fueled by strong demand from the LCD, construction, and automotive sectors. In contrast, Western Europe and the U.S. are facing declining demand due to economic slowdowns. While the U.S. is still expected to see a modest 3% annual growth, it lags behind other regions.
Prior to 2007, the global MMA market was characterized by tight supply conditions. However, with several new production facilities coming online, especially in 2008, market tensions eased significantly. This period included Luckett International’s fourth quarter of 2008, during which Singapore launched a new 120,000-ton/year facility. MMA is primarily used in polymerization processes to produce PMMA and its derivatives, which find extensive applications in automotive lighting, construction materials, and signage due to their transparency, durability, and lightweight properties. Additional uses include consumer electronics, optical components, packaging, and household goods.
MBS copolymers also play a significant role as impact modifiers in rigid PVC, particularly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. Over 80% of MMA consumption is concentrated in construction and automotive sectors, both of which have been impacted by the global economic downturn. New capacity additions are expected in 2009 and 2010, including Evonik's 115,000-ton/year plant in Shanghai, South Korea’s Dashan Company launching a 90,000-ton/year project, and Thailand’s expansion of its MMA plant to 180,000 tons/year. In Europe, Quinn Chemical plans to complete a 100,000-ton/year facility in Leuna by 2011.
According to SRI Consulting, global MMA production capacity reached about 3.7 million tons per year by the end of 2008, with projections of 4.2 million tons by 2011. Meanwhile, Asian MMA prices have declined sharply since November last year, dropping from $2,200/ton to $1,700/ton in Northeast Asia. In China, local prices are around RMB 12,000/ton, while imported MMA costs approximately $1,450–$1,500/ton. In Europe, contract and spot prices fell significantly between mid-November and mid-January due to weak demand. European contract prices dropped to €1,425–1,485/ton in Q1, while U.S. contract prices fell by 20–30% compared to the previous quarter. Raw material prices, such as acetone and chemical-grade propylene, also saw sharp declines, contributing to the downward pressure on MMA pricing.
