The Crete Township Fire Protection District, part of MABAS Division 27, operates three fire stations. Their fleet includes a range of engines from manufacturers like Pierce, E-ONE, Luverne, and Alexis. The department also utilizes Medtec ambulances and maintains three tankers (tenders), with the most recent one completed in 2011 by Alexis on a Freightliner M2 chassis.
One notable piece of history comes from 1995 when Crete Township, along with several other south suburban departments, ordered an engine from Luverne built on an HME 1871 chassis. Two of these units featured the largest extended and raised cabs available at the time. One was assigned to Alsip, while the other remains in service with Crete Township, equipped with a fully enclosed pump operator panel.
A recent addition to the fleet is a 3,000-gallon tender constructed by Alexis on a Freightliner chassis. This unit features a graphic on the porta-tank cover that showcases a steamer restored by Gene Morris of Alexis Fire Equipment. The design reflects the district's long-standing connection to traditional firefighting equipment and heritage.
The image above highlights the steamer graphics that appear on the tanker. These visuals are not just decorative but serve as a tribute to the historical significance of steam-powered fire apparatus. The steamer itself is currently housed at Alexis Fire Equipment, where it has been carefully restored to preserve its original appearance.
Crete Township’s commitment to maintaining a mix of modern and classic equipment underscores their dedication to both efficiency and tradition. Whether responding to emergencies with state-of-the-art engines or honoring the past through vintage designs, the department continues to serve its community with professionalism and pride.
