Why Waterborne Coatings Are "Industrial and Market Cold"

The development of waterborne wood coatings in China has undergone a difficult process in the past 10 years. At present, the road to industrialization is still far away. Not long ago, the China Coatings Industry Association held the first waterborne wood coatings development seminar in Guangzhou to promote the research, promotion and application of waterborne wood coatings in China. According to reports, although the industry association is committed to the promotion of waterborne wood coatings with high enthusiasm, there are also many domestic paint companies attending the meeting. However, there are many companies waiting to see and really want to get involved. This phenomenon was vividly referred to by the painter association as "industry fever and cold market."
The “precursor” is difficult to become a climate. The promotion of waterborne wood coatings is very beneficial to the rational use of resources and the improvement of environmental sanitation. Due to the increased operability of waterborne wood coating construction, well-known decoration companies in China are planning to fully use waterborne wood coatings, training painters to set up corresponding construction teams, and initiate waterborne sports. Today, with increasing emphasis on paint safety and environmental protection indicators, waterborne wood coatings are gradually being accepted by the market because of their low-risk, low-pollution characteristics.
However, over the past ten years after the development of waterborne wood coatings, it is difficult for the well-known coating companies that are the first to get involved in the country to become a climate. In 1995, DuPont Coatings of Germany first entered the Chinese market and promoted its mature waterborne wood coating brand in Europe. Although the environmental performance of its products is good, due to its high price, the product is “satisfied with soil and water”. In 1996, Shandong Yalimei became the first company to produce waterborne wood coatings in China, but it declined in 2000. Shenzhen Qibao Chemical Co., Ltd. entered the market in the third year in 2003, claiming that its products solved the quality and cost problems of water-based paints, but three years passed and the market response was flat. In the same year, the products of Shenzhou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. were also officially listed, but due to the high prices, it has been difficult to open up the situation. Subsequently, Da Bao, Universal, Aipu Shi, Zhongnan Building Materials and other well-known companies have also entered the market one after another, but none of them actually formed mass production.
Too Many Constraints The water-based products of a well-known company have attracted few people, which has exacerbated the wait-and-see mentality of domestic paint companies. The domestic policies and regulations can not keep up, products and technical services and supporting manufacturers can not reach the user requirements, etc., more companies will block the market.
The United States and the European Union have long introduced regulations to restrict solvent-based paints. China has not only failed to explicitly specify that it cannot use solvent-based paints, nor does it require that water-based paint be used on wooden furniture. The relevant requirements in the "Technical Requirements for Water-Resistant Coatings for Environmentally-Friendly Marking Products" implemented in August 2005 are much lower than similar requirements in Europe and the United States.
Technically, there are many problems with water-based coatings. First, the drying speed is too slow. At room temperature, the final hardness is not reached in many days, and it is impossible to meet the requirements for industrialized high-quality, high-efficiency coating. The high hardness and fullness required by users are also difficult to achieve. The second is that the VOC (volatile organics) residue is high. Due to its extremely low volatility of the filming aid, if it cannot be dried, after 7 days drying at room temperature, its odor residue is no less than polyurethane paint. The third is high product costs. At present, its raw material synthetic resin technology is in the hands of foreign companies, and most of them rely on imports. As the product is still in the development stage, research and development and marketing costs are higher, and the product cost is more than twice that of the solvent-based paint.
In addition, from the perspective of matching, the price of waterborne primer and putty is high, and furniture factories and research institutes also lack cooperation with coating production companies, and it is difficult to expand.
Therefore, many paint companies adopt follow-up tactics and do not want to give up their own initiative. This leads to a lack of innovation in the product and it is difficult to create a climate.
Opportunities should not be missed Waterborne coatings have become a trend and consumers are in desperate need of such environmentally friendly coatings. At present, Germany DuPont and British ICI have launched the second generation of waterborne wood coating products in China. The rise in international crude oil prices has increased the cost of solvent-based paints and gave opportunities for water-based products. Therefore, the industry should promote industrialization of waterborne wood coatings through policies, regulations, markets, and technology.
The first is the orientation of policies, regulations and standards. It is necessary to strive for national support for environmental protection products, but also to eliminate backward products from the start, focusing on promoting the environmental protection superiority of waterborne wood coating products, and guiding them with standards.
The second is market orientation. Through publicity, the market needs for environmental protection, humanistic care and return to nature should be given priority, and consumption habits and construction habits should be changed.
The third is technology-oriented. To improve the level of product performance, improve the level of construction equipment and the formation of a reasonable cost-effective focus as the key to providing technical support for the scale of waterborne wood coatings production. Upstream resin, filler, and additive manufacturers should provide technical innovation raw material support and supporting services for waterborne products. The downstream construction companies should focus on the construction of waterborne wood coatings and the matching of construction equipment.
