The Chicago Tribune reports that a startling discovery was made at the Lyons Post Office on Saturday morning. A U.S. Postal worker named Mark Thompson found what appeared to be a half-stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder inside a broken envelope, hidden among a stack of packages and other mail.
According to officials from the Lyons Fire Department, the suspicious package was discovered around 8:11 a.m. at the west suburban post office located at 7836 W. Ogden Ave. As a precaution, emergency responders were immediately dispatched, including hazardous materials teams and multiple fire departments. The post office was quickly evacuated while the Cook County Bomb Squad arrived on the scene to assess the situation.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on site and captured several images documenting the response. The photos show hazmat technicians preparing for entry, conducting briefings, and working in full protective gear as they examined the potential threat. Other images highlight additional support from nearby fire departments, with crews stationed outside the "hot zone" and water supply units assisting in the operation.
One image shows two firefighters from Bedford Park in basic protective gear standing by to assist the hazmat team. Another captures the Pleasantview rehab unit arriving to provide further support. The scene was clearly tense, with multiple agencies working together to ensure public safety.
