The Long Grove Fire Department received an emergency call this morning regarding a house on fire at 1889 Checker Road. The property, which had been vacant for some time, had served as a training site for the past two weeks, with eight other fire departments conducting multiple interior fire drills daily. Training concluded yesterday, and the structure was scheduled to be demolished by the developer this Saturday morning, with local residents invited to witness the controlled burn.
However, this morning’s incident turned out to be a real fire rather than a training exercise. A neighbor initially hesitated to call the fire department, thinking that the crews might still be in the middle of their training. Once it became clear that the fire was unattended, she immediately reported it. The Long Grove Fire Department responded swiftly with their full complement of equipment, including Tanker 55, since no hydrants were available in the area.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had ignited. The garage was already down, and the pallet storage area was fully involved. The first units on scene quickly deployed five lines to contain the flames, while Tanker 55 supplied 3,000 gallons of water to support the operation.
Additional resources were called in from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake to help prevent the structure from being completely destroyed. Engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine, along with an ambulance from Arlington Heights for medical support, also arrived on the scene. Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts, much of the house was saved and will eventually be burned on Saturday as planned.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze, using both exterior and interior attack methods. A 2.5-inch line was deployed around the heaviest part of the fire, and foam was applied to smoldering areas to conserve water. Prospect Heights Tanker 9 arrived with an additional 3,000 gallons of water, helping to sustain operations when Long Grove's own tanker ran low.
The fire was contained successfully, and the remaining structure stood largely intact. Local photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the event, documenting the firefighters’ efforts and the condition of the home. Images show the intensity of the fire, the strategic positioning of apparatus, and the dedication of the responding crews.
In addition to the fire, the article includes photos from the previous two weeks of live fire training at the same location. Multiple departments participated in daily exercises, practicing interior searches, fire suppression, and coordination. The final day of training saw increased intensity, with more complex scenarios simulating real-life emergencies.
