Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11

The Long Grove Fire Department was called this morning to a house fire at 1889 Checker Road. The building had been used for training purposes over the past two weeks by the Long Grove Fire Department and seven other local departments, who conducted multiple interior fire drills daily. Training concluded yesterday, and the department had planned to demolish the structure for the developer on Saturday morning, with residents invited to witness the controlled burn. However, the incident took an unexpected turn when a neighbor, thinking the fire department might still be conducting training, delayed reporting the fire by about 20 minutes. Once she realized it was a real emergency, she called 911, and the Long Grove Fire Department responded with their full crew, including Tanker 55. Since the area lacks hydrants, water had to be transported from nearby sources. As the first responders arrived, they found a working fire at the north end of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets was fully involved. The garage was already down, and smoke was visible from the second-story section. Firefighters quickly deployed five lines, with Tanker 55 supplying 3,000 gallons of water to support the operation. Additional resources were called in, including tankers from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake, as well as engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine. An ambulance from Arlington Heights was also dispatched for medical support. Despite the challenging conditions, much of the house was saved, and the structure is still scheduled to be burned on Saturday. Throughout the incident, photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the scene, documenting firefighters battling the blaze from both inside and outside the home. Images show crews using high-pressure lines, applying foam to smoldering areas, and working under difficult conditions due to the lack of nearby water sources. The fire was eventually contained, and efforts shifted to preventing further spread. As the fire diminished, crews focused on extinguishing hot spots and ensuring the area was safe. The house remains standing for now, with plans to conduct the controlled burn next week. A gallery of images from the fire can be viewed [here](#).
