Chicago 5-11 Alarm + 2 Specials 1-22-13 (pt13)

More images from the ruins of Tuesday's 5-11 Alarm fire, which took place at 3757 S. Ashland Avenue, are now available. This time, Larry Shapiro captured footage from the start of the demolition on Friday. The site remains under active cleanup as crews work to dismantle the structure safely. A heavy fire still burns in the basement beneath the debris, as seen in this photo. A wrecking company is beginning to take down the front wall of the burned building, carefully removing sections to ensure safety. An excavator clears debris along the south side of the building near 38th Street, revealing the full extent of the damage. A large section of the building’s wall is torn free, marking a significant step in the demolition process. Meanwhile, Engine 39 returns to the station with rolled hose on its tailboard, having just completed a long shift. Inside an adjacent vacant building, graffiti and signs of age tell the story of another structure that has stood for decades. The exposure building to the south suffered only minor damage due to the fire. As the crane works, the south wall begins to collapse, signaling the final stages of the operation. Water dripping from the rear discharge of Engine 39 has frozen, creating a unique and icy scene. People continue to gather around the ruins, capturing the haunting beauty of the ice-covered structure. A streetlight on 38th Street melted during the fire, a visible reminder of the intense heat. From the third floor of a nearby building, water is directed into the center of the ruins, helping to control any lingering flames. The careful dismantling of the building continues, with each wall section removed slowly and deliberately. A wall on the northwest corner is encased in ice, allowing a glimpse of smoke still rising from the core of the structure. For more photos from the scene, visit shapirophotography.net.
