On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments held a solemn memorial ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event took place at Maine West High School, located at the corner of Dempster and Potter Streets. Attendees gathered to honor the victims and first responders who lost their lives on that tragic day. The ceremony featured several speakers, a touching moment with a World Trade Center steel beam presented to the city, and a powerful procession led by the Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band along with the police and fire department honor guard.
The steel beam, which had once stood in the ruins of the Twin Towers, was transported in the bed of Park Ridge Engine 35, covered with an American flag. It was treated with deep respect, symbolizing the sacrifice of those who perished. The honor guard carefully carried the flag-draped beam to the stage, where it remained throughout the day for visitors to reflect upon. This artifact served as a powerful reminder of the events of 9/11 and the enduring strength of the community.
Larry Shapiro captured the moment through his photography, documenting key parts of the ceremony. His images show the pipe and drum band leading a somber procession down Potter Road, the combined honor guard walking alongside the engine carrying the steel beam, and the respectful way the artifact was handled during the event. Visitors were moved by the sight of the beam, and many paused to pay their respects.
The ceremony included a 21-gun salute from the Park Ridge VFW color guard, followed by a bell ringing ceremony that honored the first responders who lost their lives. A local resident performed "Taps" to close the tribute, adding a heartfelt note to the occasion. Throughout the event, members of the honor guard stood watch over the steel beam, ensuring its safekeeping and allowing people to view the powerful symbol of remembrance.
As the ceremony came to a close, the honor guard folded the American flag that had been used to cover the artifact, marking the end of a meaningful and emotional day. For those who attended, it was a time of reflection, unity, and deep gratitude for the courage and sacrifice of the past. More photos from the event can be viewed [here](#).
