On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments held a solemn memorial ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event took place at Maine West High School, located at the corner of Dempster and Potter Streets. Attendees gathered to honor the lives lost on that tragic day, with several speakers addressing the crowd and a powerful tribute to the victims.
A significant highlight of the ceremony was the arrival of an authentic steel beam from the World Trade Center, which had been gifted to the city. The Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band led a somber procession down Potter Road, accompanied by the police and fire department’s honor guard. The beam, covered in an American flag and transported in the bed of Park Ridge Engine 35, was treated with the utmost respect as it made its way to the ceremony.
Once on stage, the honor guard carefully carried the flag-draped beam, ensuring it remained visible throughout the day for visitors to reflect upon. The ceremony featured a 21-gun salute from the Park Ridge VFW color guard, a bell ringing ceremony to honor first responders, and a heartfelt performance of "Taps" by a local resident.
Throughout the event, members of the honor guard stood watch over the artifact, symbolizing their commitment to remembering those who were lost. As the ceremony concluded, the flag that had covered the steel beam was carefully folded, marking the end of a deeply moving tribute.
