A polo shirt, also known as a golf shirt and tennis shirt, is a T-shaped shirt with a collar, typically a two- or three-button placket, and an optional pocket. Polo shirts are usually made of knitted cloth (rather than woven cloth), usually piqué cotton or, less commonly, silk, merino wool, or synthetic fibers.
A polo shirt is typically a cotton shirt with a color. They are usually short sleeved, but can be long sleeved as well. The first polo shirt was worn by a French tennis player named Rene Lacoste. Four years later the Lacoste alligator dominated retailer shelves around the world on the first polo shirt.
Polo shirts are collared short sleeved shirts most often made of either mesh or soft pima cotton. Sometimes there is polyester added to prevent wrinkling. Polos can run in men's, women's and children's sizes. Most polos are to be washed in like colors in cool warm water. A generic soap is adequate unless you have white polos that need bleaching.
Decide what the use of the polo shirt will be. Choose a textured polo shirt for the women for a special outdoor occasion. Choose a regular old cotton or pique polo shirt for a regular old day.
Decide whether you want a short sleeve or long sleeve shirt. Choose a short sleeved shirt for warmer days or under sweaters. Choose a long sleeve polo shirt for brisk fall days. Remember you can layer up on top of polo shirts and still look fashionable with the polo shirt collar sticking up through.
